a descoperit gena morţii.
nu a nemuririi, ci a morţii.

şi te fereşte de groaza vieţii de dincolo,
când eşti pe cale să pleci.

am dat fuga repede-n vărai
să-l întâlnesc şi să-mi rezolv
spaima de moarte, dar
era luni şi ăla plecase la
târg la şomcuta, aşa că

l-am plătit pe unul cu maşină
să mă ducă la şomcuta.
muream pe mine de spaima că voi muri.

vezi bine că ăla nu era-n târg
în şomcuta, dar mi-au spus
că s-a dus la baia mare, unde
cartofii se vând mai bine,

aşa că am pornit spre baia mare.
spaima crescuse pe mine cât casa.
şi dă-i prin baia mare şi caută-l
şi până la urmă unul a zis
că s-a dus la crâşmă să se-mbete
şi bate tu toate crâşmele şi a treia zi,
când l-au adus acasă, avea
maţele peste el şi
maşina salvării nu mai voia să pornească.

mă întorc acasă după ani şi ani de
umblat prin bucureşti
şi mă întorc cu o plasă goală în mână
şi iese ea la poartă şi îmi zice păi
dragul nostru, parcă ai zis că mergi la câştig,
parcă ziceai că tu, în doi ani, o să câştigi cât alţii în patru
şi uite că acum n-aduci nimic.

ba, uite, dragilor, chiar nimic am câştigat.
şi aduc atâta nimic acasă cât n-a putut aduna
nimeni în ăştia doi ani.
nici n-am putut căra de unul singur atâta
nimic cât am câştigat.

în urma mea vin carele-ncărcate cu nimic,
gata să se rupă sub greutate.
când or să se deşarte toate-n curtea noastră
nimeni n-o să aibă atâta nimic ca şi noi.

într-un an, doi, o să fie mai căutat decât aurul.
o să vindem din el numai când va fi la mare preţ.
fiţi siguri, dragilor, atâta nimic n-are nimeni.
doi ani am tot adunat numai cu gândul la voi.

mă întorc acasă o singură dată pe an, în noiembrie,
atunci când morţii mei se hotărăsc dintr-o dată să moară.
adun un an întreg bani pentru asta.
nu mă pot lăsa neîngropat.

după cum nu mă pot sluji de nefericire tot timpul. trebuie
să plătesc. morţii mei trebuiesc înmormântaţi.
în noiembrie, când viaţa e încă în toi, eu trebuie să mă întorc acasă,
cineva precis a murit iar, pe cineva din casa noastră
precis trebuie iar să-l plângem.

n-am bani întotdeauna. dar întotdeauna
cineva se cară dintre noi şi până să ajung să
fiu eu acela, trebuie să plătesc.
nu ne mai face plăcere să ne întâlnim de sărbători dar
când pleacă unul ne întâlnim negreşit.

pentru că altfel pentru cel în lipsă s-ar putea să hotărască alţii
şi noiembrie următor nu mai e departe
şi peste toate astea petrecem pe cinste, nu degeaba
adunăm tot anul care vine bani.

12 octombrie 1976

de patru generaţii, în dosul casei noastre curge
un pârâu cu sânge întunecat.
de ani şi ani, tatăl meu îl acoperă cu paie şi frunze
să nu afle vecinii. şi tatăl lui îl acoperea şi el cu paie şi frunze
şi poate că va fi rândul meu să-l acopăr curând,
pentru că nu-i bine să afle vecinii ce curge acolo.

primăvara ne facem şi noi că arăm şi semănăm,
ca să pară că suntem în rând cu lumea,
toamna ne facem că strângem şi noi roade,
ca să semănăm cu ceilalţi, să nu se bage de seamă,
dar de fapt nu facem decât să aşteptăm, să
pândim cine vine la rând, unul din noi
sigur vine la rând.

ne petrecem ziua urându-l pe cel care va scăpa, deşi
cine scapă, scapă doar până la o dată următoare.
în timpul ăsta, pe pârâu se scurge o şuviţă de
sânge întunecat, îl acoperim de ani şi ani cu
paie şi frunze,
nu-i bine să afle vecinii ce curge acolo,
trebuie să părem şi noi în rând cu lumea.

sunt un bărbat singur. nu-i nici o mândrie în asta. doar sunt
hoarde de nefericiţi care umblă şi caută
alţi nefericiţi – numai că între nefericiţi şi nefericiţi
sunt mari praguri de nefericire.

unii au bani mulţi, alţi au speranţe
deşarte – nu există doar nefericiţi
de-un singur fel.

iar când, totuşi, se unesc,
nefericiţii fac revoluţii, după care
li se ia totul.

12 octombrie, altă dată

la zece ani mi-au cumpărat primii pantofi.
erau lungi şi galbeni ca nişte sicrie.
nu i-am purtat niciodată. m-au pedepsit
mulţi ani pentru asta. n-am mai râs de atunci.
mâna mea a început să scrie.

anul subţire al pulberii e aproape de sfârşit.
şi nici nu l-am simţit prea bine, ba chiar aş zice
că ne-a fost mai bine ca altădată, uneori am fost chiar fericiţi,
ceea ce nu se poate spune şi despre alţi ani ai noştri.

poate asta se datorează şi faptului că anul acesta
am fost foarte obosiţi şi am dormit mult mai mult ca în alţi ani.
ba poate nici nu ne-am trezit ca-n alte dăţi
şi am fost deznădăjduiţi cu măsură, dacă pot spune aşa.

în schimb, s-au înmulţit orele în care nu fac nimic, chiar dacă
muncesc mult, întreaga zi. trebuie să se-mplinească doi-
trei ani de când nu mai fac nimic. dar, într-adevăr, muncesc pe
rupte, întreaga zi, pentru că seara e bine să fiu
foarte obosit, atât de obosit încât să dorm mult,
foarte mult, până-ntr-atâta încât într-o zi să
pot dormi fără oprire iar a doua zi să continuu să dorm
şi a treia zi.

nu ştiu ce l-a apucat pe tatăl meu să-njuge boii la car
la doişpe noaptea, să mă trezească şi să-mi spună hai.
eu după ce mor dorm somnuri lungi. unde, am zis,
a zis: la şomcuta mare. ce putea să-l mâne pe el
în miez de noapte tocmai la şomcuta mare,
la atâta drum de satul nostru? şi de ce să nu ia
autobuzul, dimineaţa la şase, de ce să umblăm
patru ceasuri încolo, patru ceasuri încoace
cu mersul moale şi greoi al boilor noştri?
dacă-i pe aşa, n-o să mă mai prindeţi acasă de-acum prea devreme,
n-o să mă trezesc în miez de noapte pentru o nebunie ca asta.

şi-atunci se apropie ea şi zice: scoală
dragul mamei, tatăl tău
tocmai pleacă să te-aducă de la şomcuta,
du-te să-l ajuţi să te ridice,
de trei zile zaci acolo fără suflare
şi abia de-au ajuns să ne dea de ştire astă seară,
dragul nostru.
la treizeci şi şase, am învăţat să mă rog. am făcut rost cu chiu cu vai
de un dumnezeu al meu, o păpuşă din gumă, ferfeniţită,
cu buzele groase, cu o mână sărită din umăr,
cu cauciucul de pe pântece tăiat. până la urmă,
numai atâta dumnezeire mi-a fost dat mie să aflu
şi nu-i, poate, păpuşa asta din gumă cel mai puţin dumnezeu
ce i s-a dat unui om.

de asta, în cămara unde stau, l-am pus la loc de cinste, pe masă.
la dumnezeul meu, acesta, nu îmi e ruşine să mă rog
nici când mă întorc acasă pe patru cărări, abia reuşind să-i arunc
două-trei vorbe deşucheate înainte să mă prăbuşesc
cu capul pe masă şi cu mâna peste beregata lui.

e drept, cu dumnezeul ăsta de gumă o să fiu mai puţin iertat.
dar, aşa schilod cum este, pare mai puţin nepăsător.
şi când mă rog nu urlu, n-are rost, oricum n-aude,
totuşi i-am retezat urechea, ca să-mi pară
că dacă i-o lăsam m-ar fi putut auzi. deci când mă rog
nu urlu. nu mă jelui. nu cer îndurare. am învăţat să mă rog
ca la orice lucru fără rost. nu mă mai uit la cer,
e limpede: nu am venit de-acolo.

mă rog cum pot: uneori tăvălit pe duşumea, alteori
şuierându-i în urechea teafără un cântec deocheat,
el oricum n-aude, dar cu el e mai puţină teamă,
mai puţină singurătate-n casa asta.

poate doar moartea îmi va fi la fel de nemiloasă
ca moartea pe care dumnezeul celorlalţi o pregăteşte
pentru fiecare dintre-ai lui în parte.
pe dumnezeul meu eu însă-l pot ierta şi pentru asta,
el n-are habar, doarme căzut într-o rână pe masă,
când mă rog nu urlu, el oricum n-aude,
abia lălăi un cântec deşucheat, mă clatin spre el, îi caut gâtlejul,
mă-mpleticesc şi-ngenunchi.

banchetul
aşa a fost mereu în casa noastră:
trei paturi prin care trebuiau să treacă
pe rând toţi. şi fiecare, vreme de generaţii, a
urmat acest traseu şi asta a devenit cu timpul lege
şi pe asta s-a întemeiat casa noastră.

noi suntem ultimii născuţi. celor nou-născuţi
li s-a menit să şadă-n colţul luminos al încăperii.
suntem prea proaspeţi pe lume ca să înţelegem
că în casa asta mai sunt şi alţii. lumea noastră
e doar patul luminat de sub fereastră.

trec ani buni până băgăm de seamă că părinţii
stau şi ei aici, dar într-un alt pat, mai îndepărtat,
la care lumina ajunge cu mult mai greu.
ei fac mai puţin zgomot, se mişcă mult mai încet decât noi.
dar trec ani buni până să înţelegem asta.

şi într-o zi descoperim că dincolo de ei, în colţul
cel mai întunecat al încăperii, e un al treilea pat
şi când aflăm încetăm să mai râdem –
noi credeam că acolo, în umbră, se termină întreaga lume

şi acum găsim că cineva suflă acolo şi nimeni
nu-l ia în seamă;
mi se spune doar: acolo este bătrânul casei, este tatăl tuturor.
deci acolo este un tată, deci colţul acela există, îmi spun.
apoi ne obişnuim şi uităm şi doar noaptea
îl auzim pe cel din colţul acela cum gâfâie neplăcut –
dracul l-a pus în aceeaşi încăpere cu noi.

îmi locuiesc încă patul de lângă fereastră dar nu mai râd
de cel care gâfâie în colţul opus:
în sinea mea cred că în chip voit nu ne e arătat.
şi când este scos într-o zi afară, e scos din încăpere
cu umbră cu tot şi pentru noi rămâne un mare necunoscut.
mi se dă voie să pipăi doar scândura nouă a sicriului.

în schimb, tatăl meu, din patul al doilea, trece
cu umbră cu tot în patul celui plecat,
eu trec în patul lui, o carne tânără ocupă patul meu dinainte,

dar totul se petrece încet şi dintr-un
pat în altul se trece după multă aşteptare, a câştiga
următorul pat e urmarea unei bătălii grozave,
unei încleştări lungi şi ascunse.

cei din primul pat râvnesc deja la al doilea, se
vede asta în ochii lor, eu însumi mă simt
mânat noaptea de-o râvnă grozavă să-i iau locul
celui din al treilea pat, care gâfâie acum
tot mai neplăcut în colţul lui întunecat.

şi într-o zi, patul al treilea este iar uşurat şi
cel de acolo este scos afară şi bine vârât în patul al patrulea
peste care se pune capac, să nu se întoarcă cumva, pentru că
patul lui a şi fost ocupat şi în patul al doilea s-au şi năpustit ceilalţi
şi în primul pat se aud oaspeţi noi care încă nu aud
cum cineva începe să gâfâie-n patul din fund şi acela sunt chiar.
şi-n clipa-aceea ziua păru a se-nteţi.

and i return with an empty shopping bag in my hand
and she comes to the gate and she says well,
our dear son, didn't you say you were going to make money,
that in two years you'd make as much money as others in four?
and now, look, you bring nothing.

but, look, my folks, it's exactly nothing that i earned.
and i bring home so much nothing that anyone
could ever gather in these two years.
i couldn't even carry alone so much
nothing as i got my hands on.

behind me come the carts full of nothing,
about to break down under the weight of it.
when they'll all be unloaded in our backyard
nobody will have so much nothing as we do.

a year or two from now it will be worth more than gold.
we'll start selling some of it only when its price is high.
be sure, my dear ones, nobody has so much nothing.
for two years i kept gathering thinking only of you.

i come back home once a year, in november.
when my dead ones decide suddenly to die.
i save money a whole year for that.
i cannot leave myself unburried.

just as i cannot use my unhappiness all the time. i must
pay. my dead ones must be burried.
in november, when life is still going strong, i must return home,
someone has certainly died again, and again we must certainly mourn
someone from our house.

i don’t always have money. but always
one of us goes away and until my turn comes
to be the one, i must pay.
we don’t enjoy it any more meeting on holidays, but
when one of us leaves, we meet without fail.

because otherwise the others might decide for the missing one
and next november is not too far away
and besides, we have such a great time, it is not in vain
that we save money all next year long.

i'm a lonely man. nothing to be proud of. there are armies
of unhappy people who run about and look for
other unhappy people - only that between the unhappy and the unhappy
there are many degrees of unhappiness.

some have much money, others have vain
hopes - there aren't only unhappy people
of one kind.

and when, however, they meet,
the unhappy people make revolutions, after which
everything is taken away from them.
october 12, some other time

when i was ten they bought me my first shoes.
they were long and yellow like coffins.
i never wore them. they punished me
many years for that. i stopped laughing then.
my hand began to write.

the thin year of the dust is almost at its end.
and we didn't even feel it very much; i would even say
that it wasn't any better than before, sometimes we've even been happy,
which can't be said about other years of ours.

maybe this is due to the fact that this year
we've been very tired and we've slept much more than in other years.
and maybe we didn't even wake up as on other occasions
and we were moderately desperate, if i can say that.

on the other hand, the hours when i didn't do anything multiplied, even
though
i worked hard, all day long. it must be two-
three years since i have done much of anything. but, indeed, i have been
breaking my back working, all day long, because in the evening it is good
to be very tired, so tired that i can sleep long,
very long, so much that one day i will be
able to sleep continuously, and the second day to go on sleeping,
the third day too.

I don't know what got into my father to yoke the oxen to the cart
at midnight, to wake me up and say to me come on.
after i die i sleep long sleeps. where, i said,
he said: to şomcuta mare. what could have pushed him
in the dead of the night all the way to şomcuta mare,
so far away from our village? and why not take
the bus, at six in the morning; why wander for
four hours getting there, four hours back
with the soft and slow plodding of our oxen?
if that's what it takes, from now on you won't see me back home any too soon,
i won't get up in the dead of night for such foolishness.

at thirty-six, i learned to pray. i barely managed to find
a god of my own, a rubber doll, torn to shreds,
with thick lips, with an arm out of its shoulder,
with its rubber belly slit. after all,
this is all the godship that i have ever been given to find
and maybe this rubber doll is not the least god
ever given to man.

because of that, in the room where i live, i put him in a place of honor,
on the table.
i am not ashamed to pray to this god of mine,
not even when i come back home staggering, hardly able to throw at him
two or three foul words before collapsing
with my head on the table and one hand on his throat.

it is true, with this rubber god i'll be less forgiven.
but, crippled though he is, he seems less indifferent.
and when i pray i do not shout, there is no point, he doesn't hear anyway.

it is clear: i didn't come from there.

he doesn't hear anyway, but with him there is less fear,
less loneliness in this house.

maybe for me only death will be as merciless
as the death everyone else's god prepares
for each of his own.
i can forgive my god however for this too,
he doesn't know a thing, he sleeps fallen on one side on the table.
when i pray i do not shout, he doesn't hear anyway,
i barely mumble a raunchy song, i stagger toward him, i look for his throat,
i stumble and i fall on my knees.

the banquet
it has always been like this in our house:
three beds through which everybody has had to pass
one after the other, and all of us, for generations,
have followed this path and this has in time become law
and our house has founded itself upon it.

we are the latest born. to the newly born it
has been given to sit in the bright corner of the room.
we are too fresh in this world to understand
that there are others, more people, in this house. our world
is only the bed lit by the window.

a good many years go by till it comes to our notice that our parents
live in here too, but in a different bed, farther along,
which the light reaches with much more difficulty.
they make less noise, they move more slowly than we do.
but a good many years pass till we understand this.

and one day we discover that beyond them, in the
darkest corner of the room, there is a third bed
and when we find this out we stop laughing –
we thought the whole world stopped there, in the shadows.

and now we find out that someone is breathing there and no one
pays any attention to him;
i am told only: that is the old man of the house, he is everyone's
father;
therefore there is a father, therefore that corner exists, i tell
myself.
then we become accustomed and forget and only at night
do we hear the one in that corner with his annoying breathing –
it's the devil that put him in the same room with us.

i still live in the bed next to the window, but i don't laugh any more
at the one breathing hard in the opposite corner:
deep in myself i believe it's on purpose that he isn't shown to us.
and when he's carried out one day, he's carried from the room
together with his shadow and he remains for us a great unknown.
i am allowed to touch only the new board of the coffin.

in exchange, my father, from the second bed, moves on

and one day, the third bed is unburdened again and

ik meed het alsof ik er, weglopend, aan kon ontsnappen.
maar ik kende zijn muren veretterd met haat als een oeroude schimmel
en zijn van haat wakke plafond en van haat bevende vloer
en de buren die spiedden door de vensters om te zien wat er bij ons aan de hand was –
vier generaties hebben hier doorlopend gehaat, niemand is eraan ontsnapt.

eten en drinken. zonder haat vloeien de zondagen voorbij
troebel als loog. in het begin is er misschien alleen de haat geweest van diegene

is ze een natuurlijke haat geworden, een gevoel dat bij het huis hoort, onze adelbrief

como a cualquier baratija. ya no miro al cielo;
está claro: yo no vine de allí.

rezo como pueda: a veces revolcándome en el suelo, a veces
susurrando en la oreja que le queda una canción obscena.
no oye nada, pero con él hay menos miedo,
menos soledad en esta casa.

acaso para mí sólo la muerte será tan sin piedad
como la muerte que prepara el dios de todos los demás
para cada uno de los suyos.
puedo perdonar a mi dios sin embargo para esto también,
no sabe nada, duerme caído de un lado sobre la mesa.
cuando rezo no grito, no oye nada,
yo apenas murmuro una canción indecente, me tambaleo hacia él, busco su garganta,
doy un traspié y me caigo de rodillas.

no sé cómo se le metió en la cabeza a mi padre eso de uncir los bueyes al carro
a la medianoche, despertarme y decirme ven.
después de morir yo duermo sueños largos. ¿dónde?, dije yo.
dijo: a şomcuta mare. ¿qué le podría haberle propulsado
en las altas horas de la noche vijar hasta şomcuta mare,
tan lejos de nuestra aldea? ¿y por qué no tomar
al autobus, a las seis de la madrugada?; ¿por qúe errar
cuatro horas para llegar, cuatro horas para volver
con el caminar fatigoso, lento y simple de nuestros bueyes?
si esto es necesario, desde hoy difícilmente me verás en casa;
no me levantaré en las altas horas para tales tonterías.

entonces ella se acerca y dice: levántate,
mi querido hijo, tu padre
está a punto de ir a buscarte en şomcuta,
ve y ayúdale a levantarte.
hace tres días que llevas allí tumbado sin aliento,
y fue sólo anoche que nos lo dijeron,
nuestro querido hijo.

en la época cuando estaban mancilladas por alcoholes,
envueltas en harapos y humilladas por infortunios,
mis carnes eran religiosas.

acaso no aparecieran tan jóvenes como en este momento,
cuando mi piel las enrosca de forma tan apretada,
pero por ellas he experimentado temores que
otros jamás conocerán y alegrías no autorizadas
de las que otros nunca podrán soñar.

yo debo recomenzar una vez más mostrándome resuelto
contra mí mismo, una vez más abandonar
a todos o todo, decaer de nuevo
como en los viejos tiempos, al menos por la onza de horror
con la que, siempre, he recuperado mis dones naturales.
