Biography

Sosonjan A. Khan, known by the pen name Sutera Kalbu, is the Chairman of Akademi Panggung Seri Utama (APSUE) in Brunei Darussalam and has more than 35 years of literary experience. She writes poetry, short stories, and novels, and is also a playwright, theater director, and composer of pop and nasyid songs.
She has authored over 585 poems and 575 short stories, with her works published and translated in more than 165 countries and into multiple languages. She has contributed to over 150 international anthologies and published poetry books in various languages, as well as a children’s book.
Her work has been featured in national and international media, and she has received numerous literary awards in Brunei and regionally, including major recognitions in poetry, short story, and novel writing through 2024.

I once perceived the wind's lament,
A maternal dirge in the stillness of night.
I once imbibed from a crystalline river,
A celestial greeting through verdant boughs.
I once beheld the boundless sea,
Azure and resolute in its tranquil offering.
I once reposed upon the forest's bosom,
Where trees ascended like steadfast sentinels,
Enfolding me in tender guardianship.
Sea…
You are more than restless waters;
You are the lifeline of mariners, the sustenance of coastal communities,
A mirror reflecting the heavens in harmonious delight.
Forest…
You are the Earth's vital breath,
A sanctuary for myriad delicate lives
That flourish silently beneath slumbering leaves.
River…
You are the veins of the Earth,
Conveying life to cultivated fields and humble villages.
Air…
Unseen, yet omnipresent in this wondrous realm,
The very essence of every living soul.
Oh, humanity, insatiable in your grasp… your relentless hands!
That which you term development
Becomes the harbinger of devastation.
Trees that once defied the heavens
Are felled in relentless succession
In the guise of progress.
The river, once pristine in its course,
Is now tainted with self-inflicted poisons.
Life within writhes and languishes,
Lamenting in muted agony,
Until silenced in perpetuity.
The sea, once teeming with life and wonder,
Now lies in desolate silence,
Chained by refuse and marred by petroleum scars.
Children of the sea,
Whither have they vanished?
Why do they no longer seek their home?
Not by the tempest's fury,
But because the sea has forfeited its essence,
The sea lies wounded.
And what remains to be salvaged
But emptiness and an unending sorrow?
And the air,
Once pure, now heavy with particulate and haze,
Effluents from industry and transport
Constrict the fragile lungs of the innocent.
Do you not perceive the suffocation, O mankind?
Do you not heed their desperate coughs?
They comprehend not,
Yet endure the suffering nonetheless.
You… you… you,
Erect metropolises towards the firmament,
While sacrificing the very roots of the Earth.
You conjure wondrous technologies,
Yet neglect the art of preservation.
You traverse to lunar realms and distant stars,
Yet abandon the Earth that nurtured you,
Leaving it wounded, awaiting its twilight.
Now, I hear lamentations,
Not of mother or child,
But from the expiring sea,
The hushed forest fading into oblivion,
The river that weeps in silent despair,
And the weary air
That can no longer shield.
"Why, O mankind?"
"Have we not bestowed upon you life?"
"Do you not recall your nascent days,
Playing beneath the canopy of trees
That now exist no more?"
It is not too late…
Return, O humanity,
Return to your sacred intuition.
Embrace anew this grieving Earth.
Plant a tree with the hands that once felled them.
Cleanse the river with the soul that once defiled it.
Do not tarry until the Earth is but an ember,
For when that day dawns,
No voice shall remain to speak.
If you but choose to listen…
Nature shall persist in its whisper,
Through the rush of wind, the tremor of soil,
Through the final plaint of a solitary bird,
Searching for a bough
That is no longer there.
I am the sea yearning for its azure,
I am the forest mourning its silence,
I am the river weeping without sound,
I am the air no longer pure,
A lament… a plaintive cry.
I… am the Voice of Nature.
I am the voice of Nature.
I am the voice of NATURE.
