Ambassador Of Poets Of The World - Azerbaïdjan

Salim Babullaoglu (1972) – poet, essayist and one of leading representatives of “the new wave” of the modern Azerbaijani poetry; owner of national and foreign literary prizes; his collection of poems “Picture book by Ilyas Kochmen” was included to the ten years’ best five poem books in 2010; his poems were translated into English, French, Russian, Turkish, German, Persian, Serbian, Poland, Finnish, Ukrainian, Georgian, Uzbek and Kirghiz languages. He is a member of the Board of the Union of Writers of Azerbaijan, member of Bishkek PEN Centre, chairman of the Azerbaijani Fiction Translation and Literary Relations and the head of Baku International Poetry Festival.

Wind

(2006)

The doormat on a wire swings;

a grapevine bows to a rose in a flower garden;

a willow ruffles its hair;

a daffodil bids farewell to an ant;

a piece of meadow in a sandy place says “not” to the butterflies;

a louse takes an ash shower (throws ash on its head)

a dandelion sends messengers in four direction;

a strow rolls on a stump;

train’s sound reaches the station faster than the train;

a cramped love letter bustles between the rails;

the continuation of a poem returns to a mouth-

wind is blowing

and you keep silence unwilling to tell a lie any longer.

Yetmiş yeddidə ölüb babam:

qızımla eyni yaşdaydım onda; bir az kiçik.

İndi Həmidə və uşaqlar qəbir üstündəyik.

İyirmi doqquz il keçib o vaxtdan, Saray qəbristanı böyüyüb.

Nənəm də burdadır, babamın yanında, iki ildir ki.

Burda? Yəni, harda?

Babamı ağlamaq üçün gecdir, dostlar demiş, qocayam.

Dəfndəki qıvrımsaç oğlanı xatırlayıram:

hamını bir yerdə görməkdən xoşlanardı,

və şəkilləri heyrətlə seyr edərdi başdaşlarında.

Ölümü eyninə almazdı, anlamazdı çünki;

İndi də anlamır, eyninə alsa da hər gün.

Gözlərim dolub.

«Qayıdaq, uşaqlara soyuq olacaq»-deyə dillənir Həmidə.

Qışa yaraşmayan isti var əslində.

Sinədaşına qonmuş kəpənəyi tutmaq üçün

özündən böyük qardaşını səsləyən qızımın

şaqraq səsi yayılır ətrafa,

My granddad died in 77:

I was a bit younger than my daughter is now.

Now I’m in a graveyard with my wife and children,

it’s 29 years since then,

the village graveyard is bursting

and my grandma has been resting

in peace here alongside granddad...

Here? That is where?

It’s late to be crying about granddad, my friends say, I’m already old;

I remember the curly-haired boy at the funeral:

it pleased him to see everyone gathered together there.

Amazed, he looked at the portraits on the graves;

he could not come to terms with death

for he didn’t know its essence

and now he doesn’t understand it,

although every day he comes to terms with it.

Tears in the eyes...

‘Let’s go back, the children will catch cold,’ my wife says,

though it’s unusually warm for winter.

The happy voice of my little daughter

rings out, calling  her older brother to help:

she wants to  catch a butterfly

that’s sitting on the grave

when all around are gravestones and death.

-Sənin ayaqqabın, çörəyin, pulun və bu kimi şeylər.

-O səni, nənəni, babanı, ananı, hamını yaradıb.

-Səni də?

-Bir az özündən danış.

-Nə deyim, oğlum. Mən də sənin kimi idim, sən boyda,

sən bənizdə. Sənin kimi çoxlu-çoxlu suallar verirdim hər yerdə,

anamın qucağında, atamın dizi üstdə,

evdə, çöldə, qatarda...

-Qatar nədir?

-Qatar sənin arabana bənzər,

dəmir qollar üstündə gəzər.

Amma çox böyük, içində də çoxlu-çoxlu uşaqlar.

-Mən arabamı Fəridə verəcəm.

-...

-Onlar neynirlər, ata?

-Daş yığırlar balası.

-Niyə?

-Bir-birlərinə atacaqlar.

-Niyə?

-Düşməndirlər.

-Niyə?

-Bir-birini sevmirlər.

-Niyə?

-...

-Ata, gələndə beş dondurma alarsan.

-Dayan görüm, beş niyə? Biri sənin, biri Fəridin, biri ananın,

biri mənim... bəs, biri?

-Biri də, qoy, olsun quşların.

-…

Talk with my son

-          Who are you?

-          Your father.

-          But who is Farid’s father?

-          He does not have a father.

-          Why?

-          …

-          What are you doing?

-          I am writing a poem.

-          What is a poem?

-          It is a bit like your mother’s lullaby.

-          Does my mother write as well?

-          No. She does not.

-          But why do you write? Sing!

-          …

-          Where are going?

-          To work.

-          What is work?

-          Your shoes, bread, money and the like.

-          What if you do not go?

-          …

-          Dad, who is God?

-          He has created your grandmother, grandfather, mother, everybody.

-          You, too?

-          …

-          Speak about yourself a little.

-          What to say, son. I was as tall as you with the same features of face. I was asking very many questions everywhere, in my mother`s arms, on my father`s knee, at home, in the yard, in the train...

-          What is train?

-          It is like your wagon, it goes on iron bars. But it is very big and there are many children inside.

-          I will give my wagon to Farid.

-          ...

-          Dad, what are they doing?

-          They are gathering stones, my dear

-          Why?

-          To throw at each other.

-          Why?

-          They are enemies.

-          Why?

-          They do not love each other.

-          Why?

-          ...

-          Dad, when returning buy five ice-creams.

-          Wait, why five. One for you, one for Farid, one for mother, one for me... What about the fifth?

-          Let the fifth be for birds.     

Uşaqlar və ölüm haqqında

Heç uşaqları görmüsən:

dava-dava oynayanda demirəm,

səbəbsiz-filansız gəlib

adamın qabağında durmaqlarını

və demələrini ki, bax, mən ölürəm?

Uzanırlar, gülümsünüb gözlərini yumurlar,

az sonra gülə-gülə açırlar gözlərini,

gülə-gülə qalxırlar…

About children and death

Have you ever seen children

I do not mean when playing at war,

when without any reason,

they come and stand in front of you

and say look,  I am dying?

They lie down, close their eyes,

After a little while, they open their eyes

and stand up smiling...

Zamanın yaddaşı

Zamanın yaddaşı

oğlumun və mənim yaddaşımızla ölçülməz-

bunu dərd etməyə dəyməz.

Bu yaddaş birinci insanla

 bir dəqiqə sonra doğulacaq ən qoca körpəyə qədər –

bu isə dərddən betər –

mən də, oğlum da bu yaddaş içində

 olduğumuzu anlamamışıqsa əgər...

The memory of time

The memory of time

 is not measured with my and my son’s memory,

this is not worthwhile to worry about.

This memory is measured between the first man

and the eldest baby born a minute later,

but it is worse than sorrow-

if me and my son have not realised that we are inside of this memory.

Bir insan həyatının

pərakəndə satış qiymətini

mənə desəydiniz,

bütöv bir dünyanın topdan dəyərini deyərdim sizə,

və sizə məlum cəbrlə

nəticələri tutuşdursaydınız,

uyğunsuzluq ki, girəcəkdi gözə –

sevgi məchulunun yoxluğundan

xəbər verəcəkdi.

Man’s life

If you would tell me the cost of retail sale of man’s life,

I would tell you the cost of entire world,

and if you would compare results with the algebra known to you,

such an obvious discordance you get would tell about non-existence of love’s unknown quantity.

When I was claiming to write large novels...

When I was claiming to write large novels

without wasting myself on little poems,

a little birdie perched on my window,

not fitting either in poem,

or in novel-

-then flew away.
