Marial Awendit, also known as James Marial Matueny Majak, is a distinguished South Sudanese poet, essayist, songwriter, and cultural advocate whose work has emerged as a powerful voice within contemporary African literature. Born in December 1991 in Yirol, Eastern Lakes State, South Sudan, his writing is deeply shaped by personal loss, social injustice, and the resilience of the human spirit.
Awendit began writing seriously after profound family tragedies in 2014, transforming grief into poetic expression and using literature as a means of healing, resistance, and social commentary. His work explores themes of war, memory, identity, love, human suffering, and hope, often reflecting the realities of South Sudan while resonating universally.
He is the author of several acclaimed poetry collections, including The Night Does Not Drown Us, Keeping the Sun Secret, Whispers over a Brewing Dawn, The Nilotic Coddiwomple, and Who Told You to Be God? Marial Awendit, también conocido como James Marial Matueny Majak, es un destacado poeta, ensayista, compositor y promotor cultural sursudanés, cuya obra se ha consolidado como una voz poderosa dentro de la literatura africana contemporánea. Nacido en diciembre de 1991 en Yirol, Estado de Lagos Orientales, Sudán del Sur, su escritura está profundamente marcada por la pérdida personal, la injusticia social y la resiliencia del espíritu humano.
Awendit comenzó a dedicarse intensamente a la escritura tras profundas tragedias familiares ocurridas en 2014, transformando el dolor en expresión poética y utilizando la literatura como herramienta de sanación, resistencia y reflexión social.
